Our History
Excited by the possibilities, a small group of Christians founded the Metropolitan Bible Church (The MET) in 1931, with a desire to teach the Bible and share the Good News of Jesus Christ. In 1936, under the direction of Pastor Andrew Telford, land located at 453 Bank Street in downtown Ottawa was purchased and a church building was constructed. Due to growth and interest in the various programs offered at The MET, attendance grew quickly and a ‘Christian Education’ wing was added to the building in 1967.
The MET has always had a focus on strong Bible teaching and preaching. Its current MET staff numbers 25+ and holds high this value as they believe in the power of God and His Word to change lives.
Since it began, The MET has experienced steady Sunday morning attendance growth, to a point where the Bank Street building could no longer accommodate everyone. In 2003, the church added services at Carleton University, to provide more space and reach out to Ottawa university students. During this time, the two locations welcomed about 1800 people on a Sunday morning.
Again, recognizing the need for space and desire to provide a comfortable place to invite people, a dedicated team from the church family started looking for available properties in 1996, and in 2003, approved the purchase of 6.4 acres at 2176 Prince of Wales Drive.
The new Prince of Wales home was completed and dedicated in July 2008. Our first services were held one month later. As we continue to obey and follow the Lord, we believe He is bringing us to a new level of growth - one that will enable The MET to multiply ‘ambassadors’ who will reach well beyond the walls of the home campus at Prince of Wales.
