Who We Are

The MET is a church that has been a lighthouse in Ottawa since 1931. For 77 of those years we met on Bank Street. The Great Depression held the world in its dark grip when a group of about 100 people came together to begin a new gathering of Christ-followers in the heart of Ottawa. On Sunday, September 13, 1931 the first worship service was held in a rented hall at Bank at Waverly Street. Then in 1936, the inaugural service in the new building at 453 Bank Street was held.

The church grew quickly, and by the 1990’s the pressure on space for children and adults in the facility made it no longer safe or workable to continue to meet there, and the search for land to construct a new facility began. In the goodness of God, He provided 8 acres of land in the new geographical and demographic centre of the city at Prince of Wales and Hunt Club Road. Our first meeting was held in the new facility on August 3, 2008.

Jonathan Griffiths, Lead Pastor

jgriffiths.JPG 34 KBBefore Jonathan’s birth, the Griffiths family moved from the U.K. to Canada when Jonathan’s grandfather, Dr. Gerald Griffiths, was called from Scotland to pastor The MET’s sister church in Toronto, Calvary Church, where he served for 23 years.

Jonathan grew up in Toronto and attended Calvary Church with his family. Having completed his schooling at Upper Canada College in Toronto, Jonathan went to England to study theology at Oxford University. It was there that he met Gemma, who was pursuing a teaching degree in modern languages. Jonathan then moved to Cambridge University to pursue an MPhil and PhD in New Testament studies, which he completed while teaching theology and philosophy at the historic St. Paul’s School in London. .

In 2009 Jonathan joined the ministry staff of Christ Church Westbourne in south-west England, where he had a range of teaching and pastoral responsibilities, including overall leadership of the ministry during a senior pastoral vacancy. In 2012 he was invited to join the staff of the Proclamation Trust in London, where he taught the Cornhill Training Course, that equips men and women for various forms of gospel ministry, and where he provided pastoral care to students. In September 2016 Jonathan joined The MET as Lead Pastor.

Jonathan is the author of five books, as well as other publications, reviews and Bible study notes. He was engaged in a wide-ranging preaching and conference ministry in Britain and North America. In recent years he has served as a visiting lecturer at Moorlands College (Hampshire, England), Oak Hill College (London, England) and Regent College (Vancouver).

Jonathan and Gemma were married in 2006, and have three young children: Edward (b. 2009), Arabella (b. 2011) and Hugo (b. 2014). Jonathan enjoys reading about current affairs – particularly politics and economics. He likes to get to the gym once in a while too. But mainly he loves to spend free time with family and friends.

L.I.F.E. at The MET

The Christian walk is a lifelong journey. It is an adventure which is custom-tailored for each person by God in order to glorify God. At The MET, we believe that the following four elements should play an important part in the L.I.F.E. of every Christian:

  • Lavish Worship
Encounter God in a life-changing way through worship. This includes expressing our thanks to God through music, learning from Bible-centred teaching, praying, giving, being baptized and celebrating communion together.
  • Intentional Community
Every Christian needs to be connected with other Christians in a small group to encourage, support, exhort, pray and care for one another. The MET is BIG on small groups, and offers a variety of opportunities to become a part of one, both in the church and homes around the city!
  • Faithful Service
No two people are exactly alike. God has created you with specific gifts and talents, and unique life experiences in which to develop these abilities. He created you to serve others in a specialized way, out of your love and obedience to Him, for their good and God’s glory. Together, we desire to meet the spiritual, emotional and physical needs of the people in The MET, our community and the world.
  • Effective Outreach
In addition to loving God, we were made to love others. At The MET we strive to share the love, sacrifice and forgiveness of Jesus Christ with our friends, neighbours, and colleagues.
